Hey look at me and what a shitty fan of Supernatural I am because have opinions on the show and it’s actors. Sorry that J2’s marriages look like a sham and I pick up a strong gay vibe between them. I’m a horrible, absolutely detestable human being. I mean really. I’m tired of being shamed because I have this feeling that something is going on there. Who gives a shit? I love the show (more so when Eric Kripke was there but I think that goes for most of us) and I love J2 (I don’t flail and idolize them because that’s reserved for my goddess) and I respect them too. But Jesus Christ, I am not a shitty fan or being disrespectful to them by thinking this way. Who am I hurting with my opinion? I don’t stalk them like some hets do, I don’t send hateful mail to their wives or post hate about them. But please, tell me how bad I am for being a “tinhat”.

I have a little blog on tumblr that they will most likely never see and yet I am the bad guy. Ha, whatever. Go on thinking you’re perfect because you believe everything you see and suck up to them whenever possible. I’m getting tired of being the bad fan. So from now on I am going to be an out loud and proud tinhatter and fuck off if you can’t handle it.

(the following rant has been sitting in my drafts for months now. I think it might be time to share it.)

There are tinhatters who cross the line.

There are het fans who cross the line.

But there is a definite double-standard when it comes to how hats and hets are viewed in fandom.

You don’t agree with my opinion on their love life? That’s okay. That doesn’t mean you get to put me in a box and label me as crazy and say that my opinions on anything in fandom don’t count as much as yours.

You say things like, tinhatters use the same conspiracy theory arguments in every fandom.

First of all, that’s really not entirely accurate. But did you ever stop to think that maybe that’s because it’s the same issues that affect most closeted celebs?

Homophobia exists. It sucks. It can create a debilitating fear in the life of someone who knows that if they come out, they will be judged. We can all hold hands and sing It Gets Better, but that’s the truth.

But I’m not homophobic, you say. Congrats. Good for you. The problem closeted celebs face is that they not only have to deal with real homophobia, but the perception that most of America (and the world) is full of people who range from get that filthy pervert off my tv screen, to I just can’t relate to a song where a guy is singing about another guy. As long as those people exist, TPTB will always be taking a gamble on backing an out LGBT celeb. Someone, somewhere along in the decision making process will always have to ask the question how will this affect the success rate of the project?

It might be veiled or it might be overt, but it will get asked.

And sometimes the answer is going to be why don’t we go with this other guy/girl instead.

Also, and I cannot stress this enough. Celebs are real people with real families and if I’m personally scared to come out to my extremely religious Grandmother with a weak heart (because it stresses her out enough that I don’t go to church every Sunday anymore) I can’t imagine they want Grandma to read about their gay love life on the front of a magazine in the grocery aisle. Sometimes the only way to keep the media from exploiting their personal life is to lie about it.

Straight and gay celebs enter fake relationships/’showmances’ for a variety of reasons - to keep the media off their back, to promote a project, and yes, to beard. I’m sorry if this sounds jaded, and I’m sure there are exceptions, but by and large, anyone in Hollywood who goes out to try and talk about how awesome their marriage is is hiding something. No really. Look at how many quotes there are from everyone from Jennifer Anniston to Sandra Bullock to Tom Cruise.

(And yes, I think two out of those three had beards.)

So yes, I’m a tinhatter.
